Introducing File Locker: 100GB Cloud Storage for the VeloSend Family Plan

Grandma doesn't have to be online at 2am for you to send her the photos. File Locker keeps them ready and password-protected until she is.

Introducing File Locker: 100GB Cloud Storage for the VeloSend Family Plan

Peer-to-peer file transfer is the fastest way to move a file from one device to another — the moment both people are online, the transfer starts. But that's also its one hard requirement: both sides have to be there at the same time. Send a video to a parent who's asleep, or a document to a sibling who won't check their laptop until next week, and pure P2P doesn't cover it.

That's the gap File Locker closes. It's a new storage feature built into the VeloSend Family plan, and it's designed around one simple idea: sometimes you need to send a file, and sometimes you need to leave one somewhere safe until the other person is ready for it.

What Is File Locker?

File Locker works differently from the rest of VeloSend. Our core transfers are peer-to-peer — files travel directly between browsers over an encrypted WebRTC connection and never touch our servers, as we explain in our breakdown of how P2P file transfer actually works: https://velosend.net/blog/how-does-p2p-file-transfer-work

File Locker is the deliberate exception. It's opt-in, and it's exclusive to the Family plan: you upload files once, and they're stored — password-protected and encrypted at rest — in Cloudflare R2 object storage until you delete them or their retention window runs out. Anyone with the locker's code and password can open it and download the files, whenever they're ready, without needing a VeloSend account of their own.

100GB, Shared Across Your Household

Every Family plan comes with a shared 100GB storage pool. The account owner allocates that pool across up to 5 invited household members right from their dashboard — so everyone gets their own slice to work with, sized however the family decides.

  • One pool, one plan: the 100GB is shared across the whole household, not per member, so the owner controls how it's split.

  • Flexible allotments: give the person who scans and stores family documents more room, and everyone else less — adjust anytime from the dashboard.

  • Your own view: each member only sees their own allotment as their 100%, never the household-wide total, so it's simple to reason about.

How File Locker Works

Creating a locker takes three quick steps from the File Locker dashboard.

  1. Name it and set a password. Give the locker an optional name and a password of at least 6 characters — this is what protects it, so choose one you'll remember and can share securely.

  2. Choose how long to keep it. Pick a retention period from 1 to 15 days. Shorter retention frees up more of your allotment for a single locker; longer retention means a smaller maximum size, since the files sit in storage longer.

  3. Upload and share the code. Once the files are in, share the locker's 6-digit code and password with whoever needs them. They can access and download from any browser — no account, no app, no VeloSend sign-in required.

The Rules, In Plain English

File Locker is simple to use, but it helps to know exactly how it behaves before you rely on it.

  • Retention window: 1 to 15 days, chosen when you create the locker — and you can change it later if your plans change.

  • Size scales with retention: a 1-day locker can use up to your full available allotment; push retention out to 15 days and the maximum size shrinks accordingly.

  • Locker limits: up to 2 active lockers per household member, and up to 5 active lockers per family at any one time.

  • Password protection: every locker requires its own password, at least 6 characters. VeloSend can't recover a lost password, so keep track of what you set.

  • Recipient access: all it takes is the code and password — recipients don't need a VeloSend account or a Family subscription of their own.

  • Permanent deletion: files are deleted the moment a locker expires or is manually deleted, with no way to recover them afterward — download what you need before then.

Built for Real Household Moments

File Locker isn't trying to replace instant P2P transfer — https://velosend.net/app is still the fastest way to send a file the moment both of you are online. It's built for the moments when that timing doesn't line up.

  • Grandparents in a different time zone: upload the vacation photos before bed; they download them whenever they wake up.

  • Documents that need to sit and wait: tax forms, insurance paperwork, or ID scans a family member can grab once they're back from a trip.

  • A shared household drop point: a place the whole family can pull from, gated by a password instead of a public link.

  • Large batches, no rush: anything too big or too time-sensitive to leave in someone's inbox.

Security You Don't Have to Think About

Every file in a Locker is encrypted at rest in Cloudflare R2 and sits behind its own password — nobody gets in without both the code and the password, and repeated wrong-password attempts are automatically rate-limited. Because recipients don't need an account to access a locker, it's genuinely easy to hand off to less tech-savvy relatives: no sign-up screen, no app install, just a code and a password.
